Different take-up machine has a different working principle. When you run a reel mounted on a shaft, the shaft rotates. The reel also rotates, either through compression that keeps the reel moving with the shaft or with a coupling that locks the reel onto it. A shaftless reel assembly is designed to skip this step and support and hold the reel with two posts on either end, omitting the need for an axle. A rim drive reel assembles by rotating around a flange—the rim of the reel.
